A special quilt pattern entitled "A Smoky Mountain Sampler" will be designed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Quilts constructed from this pattern will be displayed and judged at the annual A Mountain Quiltfest scheduled in Pigeon Forge for March 11 - 15, 2009. The winning quilt will receive a purchase prize and this quilt, along with copies of the pattern will be submitted to Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park for display of quilt and sales of patterns.
A Mountain Quiltfest is an annual event celebrating it 15th year in 2009. More than 25,000 people participate in some way during the event with some 800 taking classes offered by nationally-recognized expert quilters. More than 300 quilts are displayed in the events free-admission exhibit. The special quilts commemorating the 75th anniversary of GSMNP will be part of a quilting challenge competing for prizes and will be displayed in a special exhibit that is seperate from the main body of the A Mountain Quiltfest display.
A purchase prize of $2,500 will be offered by the City of Pigeon Forge to the winning quilter, with the purchased winning quilt donated to GSMNP, along with the specially designed pattern from which the quilt is to be constructed. This quilt can be displayed in GSMNP visitor centers, where copies of the pattern can be sold to the visiting public.
